That's a common misconception about crate training and it's often because it's not done properly. However if the proper positive association is made with the crate it becomes a real safe haven and den for the dog, somewhere secure that they can go when they're feeling anxious which is full of familiar smells, treats etc. When I first heard about crates I thought it was cruel to lock a dog in a cage, but when I see the huge benefit it has on the mental health of anxious dogs if done properly, I would always be a huge advocate of it. You have to think of the fact that she's going to a home as well, she's not going to be with you forever, and if she's already crate trained it will make it so much easier for her to settle into a routine in a new home.
Definitely start putting the rescue remedy in her water - it's brilliant for helping anxious dogs. Separation anxiety can occur even when there's someone with the dog. She obviously has a very strong bond with you which is why she barks when you're not there. Millie was the same, except she used to pee every time I left the room, even if she was with other people.
She's a lovely little thing. Hope she finds her perfect forever home soon.

Re: staffy girl
Hi Carol, this poor girl is in a bit of a state. Rescue dogs fall in love VERY hard at the slightest hint of stability in their lives and this is not necessarily a good thing.
Kazza, you did well there - wow you must have been listening to me as I drone on and on and on
But separation anxiety is probably the most over diagnosed (and mis diagnosed) behavioural disorder seen in dogs. It is generally accepted that if the dog eats while alone that it is unlikely to be true sep anxiety. Anorexia just before the owner departs, while allone and for a short period after the owner's return then we are looking at something else.
There are other things that it could be but it is likely to be separation distress (yes there is a difference!).
Crate training is great but also is alone training. I have a handout on alone training I can send on if you want some tips Carol, just let me know. Feel free to get in touch if you have any queries.
