History of Friends of Ben

Friends of Ben is a group of volunteers who were deeply affected by a German Shepherd called Ben who was in a Dublin pound and was put to sleep on the 31st of January 2008, despite the offer of a foster home and a rescue space for him. We acknowledge the fact that it is not possible to save all the dogs in the Irish pounds but we believe that Ben’s death could and should have been avoided. It’s terrible to live in a country where 16,000 dogs are put to sleep every year and we feel that even to save the life of one more dog is a big achievement. A lot of people came forward to help Ben and thought that he was safe but, due to a lack in communication, nothing was done to save him and he missed his only chance of a happy life.

Our mission

We are a voluntary organisation based in Ireland and our aim is to help dogs in need. Our main focus is to help the restricted breeds, but we will also help any other dog in danger.

The restricted breeds in Ireland are:

• American Pit Bull Terrier • Bull Mastiff • Doberman Pinscher • English Bull Terrier • German Shepherd ( Alsatian) • Japanese Akita • Japanese Tosa • Rhodesian Ridgeback • Rottweiler • Staffordshire Bull Terrier • Ban dog

What we do

  • Once we are notified of a dog in need, we take the dog under our care and, if necessary, place the dog in a foster home where the dog will be properly assessed

  • We will try to find a rescue space or a new home for the dog according to our rehoming procedures

  • We do homecheckes for all potential adopters and new foster homes

  • Any dog in our care will be neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before going to a new home/rescue.

  • We organize transport to/from foster homes/rescues/new homes

More information about us

Our Admin and Moderators team: we have all been involved with rescuing dogs for several years and have experience with most breeds. Despite our different backgrounds, we all aim to the same objectives and are driven by the same passion of helping dogs in need and making a difference in this country.
Please bear in mind that we are all volunteers and that we have full time jobs, our own family and pets to look after. Be patient when trying to contact us.

We do not have any facilities and the dogs that we help are either in foster homes or with their current owners.

Friends of Ben Dog Rescue operate a very simple non-destruction policy and believe that all dogs, no matter what their age or breed should get a second chance of a new life (unless for healthy reasons or under advice of a professionally qualified behaviorist).

Our activity is financed with donations from the public. Please see the appropriate section on the forum if you would like to find out more on how to send a donation.

Standards and code of practice

We believe that any dog in the pound or shelter should be taken care according to the minimum standards set by the AnimalSheltering.org which is a program of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
