Just thought I would post this, my immediate reaction is complete horror but would be interested to see what others feel about it....
and what will become of the dogs after the exhibition.

If art could save your life - Exhibition
New work by Artist Seamus Nolan

Wed 25th Feb - Fri 20th Mar
Times: 10am-5pm
Venue: Stockwell Street Theatre
Tickets: free

In collaboration with the Droichead Arts Centre Seamus Nolan will create a new body of work which looks at our ideas of value, production and judgment. The work explores how we manage and relate to our immediate environment and at the structures which dictate this relationship.

It looks at the organisation of unwanted objects; objects which are no longer of value, in this case dogs, exploring how this experience might inform our cultural and social value system. In order to explore these ideas the artist will temporarily re-home two dogs from the local dog pound in the Droichead Arts Centre. The arts centre has taken responsibility for and effectively foster the dogs for the duration of the exhibition. These dogs that have been either handed in or abandoned by their owners have become ward of the state, and considered now as public property.

The artist has initiated this arrangement between these publicly funded organisations as an intervention into notions of public and private property. Highlighting the relationship between the viewer, the dog and the situation in which this occurs in turn framing the everyday within this cultural context. In this transformation the dogs which are no longer of value, no longer useful or valuable, have reached a point where they might no longer be considered to be autonomous or even naturally occurring.

The product of a human value system, these objects without use are in a sense the waste product of man. They have become material which has had its value extracted or to use a popular metaphor consumed. This exhibition asks the viewer to consider aesthetically the structure of judgment and priority which informs our everyday decisions and ideals around notions of ownership, beauty, and appreciation.

my reaction was the same...totally disgusted angry
I disagree with any form of exhibition that involves live animals, being circus, zoo, etc. nono
I understand the message they want to send but they could have used photos for example or come up with some 'less cruel' ideas...

what bout that guy who starved a dog to death in a gallery and had the neck to call it "art". THAT WAS SICK. is the artist of this exhibition in question an animal rights activist? is it meant to shock?make people sad and think?its a crazy and unfair to use animals in this way. is it intended to raise awareness? IS THIS THE POINT. obviously these dogs are not going back to the pound. but it cannot be defined as art, the same point cud have been made through an article and photos in a good news paper.

Louth poundies in art exhibition Empty it seems it is going ahead?

Wednesday February 25 2009

KIND-HEARTED animal lovers have been ringing Droichead Arts Centre offering to adopt the dogs taking part in the controversial 'If Art Could Save Your Life' exhibition.

The huge levels of publicity generated have resulted in a number of callers saying they will rehome the strays when the exhibition ends on March 20th.

If new owners aren't found, the two dogs will be put down but this seems highly unlike according to informed sources.

Artist Seamus Nolan wants everyone who visits the dogs between now and March 20th to examine their ideas of value, production and judgment.

The strays from Louth County Council's pound will not arrive until after the official exhibition opening which takes place this evening, February 25th.

Director Marcella Bannon says the decision was taken not to put them in place until Thursday morning. The dogs will be under the supervision of the county vet, will only be in cages measuring six foot-long between 10am and noon and again from 1-4pm.

As well as having toys, water and a bed inside the cages, the abandoned dogs will be fed and walked twice a day.

Ms Bannon says that as well as having the support of the Arts Council, Drogheda Animal Rescue in also in agreement with the project.

There will be security in place at the opening and during when the dogs are on display.

Describing the exhibition as 'sickening', the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) group has urged the arts centre and Seamus Nolan 'to immediately cancel the use of these two dogs in this so called 'art' project'.

ARAN said it is nothing short of degrading to the two already helpless and suffering animals that will be caged up and put on display.

In a statement, ARAN said it would be mobilising thousands of its supporters to 'intervene and stop this sickening cruel art project'.
