Rox - border collie Empty Rox - border collie

Post  smelltheglove Wed Apr 08, 2009 6:10 am

Hi guys, just over a week ago I agreed with Carol to take Rox, I was hoping for a forever but agreed we would see how he fits in first, I know with young kids I need to be sure a dog fits well.

Unfortunately Rox wont be able to stay though and I will explain why. Rox is a lovely dog, he has not barked once since being here, he is quite timid, loves his cuddles and would make a great companion.

Now the reasons, Rox is not suited to young kids, he knows sit but has no recall and will happily trample across them. He has a bit of a humping addiction, Rox was not neutered when he arrived and harrassed Dollie for days, I think he would be best as an only dog or with another boy. He jumped up on my 6 yr old after a couple of days scratching her back a bit, down as soon as I yelled and she didnt know what was happening. Unfortunately though even after being neutered on Monday, yesterday as the 2 yearold petted him in front of my eyes he pinned her to the ground and tried to do his business, again off with a yell but obviously not the best behaviour around kids.

Rox is lovely, dont get me wrong, he is a beautiful beuatiful dog and as I said has never barked, despite what was originally said he loves his walks but he does need some training. He let a little snap at me once but it was most likely down to the fact that walking was so new to him, he was enjoying himself and may have been expecting me to hurt him rather than pet him, it has not happened since.

Now for the picture

Neutering doesn't work immediately, it take a few weeks for the hormones to calm down in his system. Training will also help. thumbsup

That may be true but I cannot sit by and watch a dog try to shag my 2 year old until it works. As I said he is a lovely lovely dog but under those kind of circumstances he should not be around children who he can harm.

Rox was with her for 5 years and never been walked, I dont think it would be good for him to go back, he was very very nervous when he first came here and is a different dog now, happily smiling, I wouldnt just let him go anywhere either, he is lovely.

It is just such a pity that he is a bit of a nympho. Laughing

Well I am happy for him to stay until the right home is found for him but unfortunately I cannot keep him inside when the kids are playing and he does love to be inside. Anyone who has met him already has been mad about him and one of my friends wanted to take him so badly but her other half would not allow it.

There are training classes held in Tymon Park every sunday from 11-4 if you wanted to try that.

If you want to let him inside put a baby gate up so that he can be inside but in a different room where he can still socialise with the family and not left out on his own.

This site explains all and has some tips to stop it, may be useful until you find him a new home

Try PM'ing Tempo on Pets Ireland. She has contacts in Heathlands who often take border collies.

Sorry to tell you guys, but humping is not stopped by neutering - if anything neutering is more likely to increase humping intensity. Humping, like any behaviour is modifiable but you are absolutley right to put your kids first and find a more suitable home for this fella.
This dog has obviously been totally under socialised and under stimulated and then is a Border Collie on top of that so a special home is def needed for him.
Best of luck to him and you in your search for the perfect home for Rox thumbsup

No way, how could you do that he is such a lovely dog, a home will be found for him but obviously the home will have to be told of this behaviour. He only tries with the kids like he sees a weakness or something. I'm sure he would be fine with adults and teenagers, and he is very friendly even the girl at the vets was commenting on how pleasent he is.
