Pitbull trained as police dogs in Italy
That was on the Italian news today..
http://notizie.alice.it/notizie/cronaca/2008/05_maggio/04/sicurezza%20%20vigili%20con%20i%20pitbull,14720764.html
Sorry I know it is in Italian - basically the article says that in one city the crime level is so high that they decided to train pitbull to go with 'vigili' (these are part of the police but only give tickets for speed, parking, etc.).
I don't know if this is a good or a bad news. On one side I think it is good because it means that these dogs are accepted by the governement (sorry that's me still being shocked after knowing of all the restricted breed policies in Ireland). On the other side I think that it might give people the wrong idea about pitbull - like if they need more bad press!!
At the moment they are doing this just as a trial.

I am very impressed by that site, thanks lilly for posting the link in here. It's just another testimonial on how great dogs pitbulls are.
Wouldn't it be great if something similar could be tried here in Ireland too?? but I am sure you have already thought about that and your pitbull classes can be just the start

Re: Pitbull trained as police dogs in Italy
i have thought about it but we have a long road ahead of us for now.. i even went as far as to ask a volunteer search and rescue center in Ireland and explained to him how these dogs are used in the us for this and do really well as the breed will not give up regardless of how tired and worn out they are and the handler said he would only use a pit bull if he was to handle it himself but he has no room for a new dog at the moment but would be happy to when the time comes who knows the next search and rescue dog could be a rescue dog its self that would be something else wouldn't it? i must get you a link to a pit bull who was rescued by a lady in the us and the story is amazing ill find it and post it asap xx

Re: Pitbull trained as police dogs in Italy
the problem is Rachelle that this breed is so very unfairly portrayed and the public is just so scared because its only what they have heard about pit bulls and you cant blame them, its the unknown and what has been put into there heads like been brainwashed so thats why its up to owners to emphasize that these breeds are not what there portrayed to be and to be an ambassador for your breed and to teach people to understand there just a dog like any other dog made of the same flesh and bone and have feelings just the same,, hopefully we can get more people to come to these classes and spread the positive light on them and to prove this, its only then will people start to see a different outlook on the breed in the right hands just like any breed and make there own minds up when they see this, it is so very easy to get a name for something but is so very hard to get rid of it so that's what we need to do..it all boils down to lack of knowledge, and only hearing about the planes that crash and never about the planes that get there safe and sound..
